Smash Ultimate amiibo Functionality

Smash Ultimate amiibo Functionality Guide

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is out now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch, and many of you are wondering what the levels of Smash Ultimate amiibo functionality are. Below, we’ll take a look at exactly what the amiibo are, what you can do with them in Smash Ultimate, and the complete list of supported amiibo in Smash Ultimate.

Smash Ultimate amiibo Functionality – What are amiibo?

Smash Ultimate amiibo Functionality

Nintendo first introduced us to the world of amiibo back with Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. They are figurines of various characters with NFC technology added in. As amiibo was first introduced with Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo released an amiibo figurine for each playable fighter, including DLC. Since then, however, many, many more amiibo have been released, including third-party characters such as Shovel Knight and the Solaire of Astora. There are hundreds of amiibo available to purchase these days, and Nintendo has promised that it will deliver amiibo figures for each of the new fighters in Smash Ultimate, too.

This is all well and good, we hear you cry, but what do amiibo actually do in Smash Ultimate? The answer, my friend, is written in the wind (we’ve got it below for you).

Smash Ultimate Amiibo Functionality – What do Amiibo do in Smash Ultimate?

Nintendo and Sakurai have increased amiibo functionality in Smash Ultimate. Not only can you use amiibo to create FP Fighters, this time around, but most amiibo that are not related to playable fighters in the game can also be used to unlock Spirits. FP Fighters are a returning feature from the last Super Smash Bros game (on both Wii U and 3DS), but they have been given an upgrade this time around.

Smash Ultimate amiibo Functionality – FP Fighters

FP Fighters can be used in any round of Smash. To set up one of these AI controlled amiibo fighters you will need to have an amiibo of one of the many playable fighters in Smash Ultimate. Thankfully, there are plenty of different amiibo figurines you can use to set up any FP Fighter. We’d imagine, too, that all of the DLC characters in Smash Ultimate (including Joker) will have amiibo figurines.

You can use any of the previous Smash Bros amiibo you may already own, but you can also make use of any amiibo you own of any character playable in Smash Ultimate. You can use a Yarn Yoshi amiibo to create a Yoshi FP fighter, an 8-Bit Mario amiibo to create a Mario FP Fighter, and any Link amiibo you may own to create a Link FP Fighter, for example. Head into the amiibo menu in Games & More, and place your amiibo on the analog stick of your Joy-Con or Pro Controller and you’re good to go. Remember, however, that no amiibo cards will work in the game.

Once created, your amiibo fighter will be saved onto the actual figurine. This means that you can bring your amiibo fighter with you anywhere and use on any Switch console. Your FP Fighter will learn and level up by taking part in Smash fights. You can also level it up by feeding it Spirits in the requisite FP Fighter menu. There are many ways in which you can unlock Spirits in Smash Ultimate, including by tapping amiibo.

Smash Ultimate amiibo Functionality – How to Unlock Spirits With amiibo

Smash Ultimate amiibo Functionality

As long as there is a Spirit of the character in Smash Ultimate, you will be able to unlock it simply by tapping an amiibo. Doing this means you won’t need to win the Spirit challenge fight or buy them with the in-game currency.

There are plenty of amiibo you can scan to unlock Spirits, however, which is why we’ve listed all of the known amiibo that will unlock Spirits in Smash Ultimate below (with their series in brackets). Finally, you’ll be able to make use of that Chibi-Robo amiibo you bought with Chibi-Robo Zip-Lash.

Smash Ultimate Amiibo Functionality – How to Use Amiibo in Smash Ultimate

As in any Switch game with amiibo functionality, to use an amiibo is quite simple. Head over to the amiibo section of the game and once inside follow the instructions. This will have you tapping and holding your required amiibo on top of a Joy-Con or Pro Controller analog stick for as long as the game asks. Once you have done this, you can use your amiibo in Smash Ultimate for whatever you may fancy.
