Veteran players that have cleared the main storyline in Gearbox Software and 2K Games’ latest looter-shooter will have encountered the Guardian Rank system. Leveling up this endgame addition will allow you to acquire a range of bonuses that’ll give you an advantage in combat situations and, ultimately, make Mayhem Mode more manageable. But is there a Borderlands 3 max Guardian Rank? And if so, what is it?
Is there a Guardian Rank level cap in Borderlands 3?
Initially, there wasn’t a hard cap on players’ potential Guardian Rank. This means that, theoretically, your chosen Borderlands 3 Vault Hunter could’ve gotten infinitely powerful, though of course with the experience required for each level going up it’d eventually become a huge grind for each individual rank.

Perhaps keeping this in mind, in a recent patch Borderlands developer Gearbox implemented a hard Guardian Rank limit of 850. Getting there is still a monumental task, there’s no doubt about that, but with an end goal in sight, people might be more willing to invest the time to get there.
If you’re wondering how to do so, you can learn about increasing your Guardian Rank below.
How to gain Guardian Ranks in Borderlands 3?
Depicted by a purple experience bar that sits atop the standard yellow experience bar (assuming you haven’t already hit the base level cap of 50), your Guardian Rank can be increased in all the usual ways. That’s killing enemies, completing quests, and completing challenges. Filling the bar grants players a Guardian Token and these can be exchanged for a variety of Bonus Stats.
These stats fall under the three umbrellas of Enforcer, Survivor, and Hunter; they impact a player’s damage, defense, and combat enhancements (like accuracy and reload speed) respectively. By sticking to a certain set of Bonus Stats, players can also be granted Guardian Rewards that include new passive abilities and cosmetic items.
