When you have missiles equipped, try aiming for walls and objects near your intended target. The resultant blast will take them out.
Get used to moving in one direction and firing in the other - this skill becomes essential on some of the later levels.
If you hit a dead end, look for strange panels on the floor - these open doors elsewhere in the level.
