Hopoo Games’ hit roguelike Risk of Rain 2 is available across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and the Xbox One. It also includes online multiplayer, with co-op support for up to four separate players. But would all players need to be running on the same console? Does Risk of Rain 2 support cross-platform play?
Risk of Rain 2 Cross-Play | Is there cross-platform support?
Sadly, Risk of Rain 2 does not support cross-platform play. While the lack of cross-play is disappointing, it’s always possible that cross-platform support could be introduced in a future update.
As things stand now, the team at Hopoo Games has not made any official mention of cross-play. However, if the feature is indeed possible, it would need some time before it could be implemented.
In order for cross-play to become a reality, all platforms would need to be running the same version of the game software. Otherwise, there would be jarring inconsistencies between individual experiences, such as missing items, Survivors, or even entire levels.
At the timing of writing, console versions have yet to receive all of the newest content. The latest PC release is version 1.0, which includes several new items and finally adds a final boss. Consoles such as the Switch, PS4, and Xbox are running an older version which corresponds with the previous Artifacts 2.0 update. At the very least, consoles would need to reach update version 1.0 before cross-play would become possible.
Sorry folks, Risk of Rain 2 does not have cross-platform play, at least not yet. Fortunately, up to four players on the same platform can still join together for online co-op. They just won’t be able to link up with players from different platforms. If you’re picking up the game to enjoy with your friends, it’s best to make sure you’re all running on the same hardware first.
