Do PS4 DualShock 4 controllers work on PS5?

Sony has revealed the new DualSense controller alongside its newest console, the PlayStation 5. It’s bigger, it’s bolder, and it’s filled with fancy new technology. But what about players who prefer the PS4 controller? Does the DualShock 4 work on PlayStation 5? Or will players be stuck using the system’s new controller?

Does the PS4 DualShock 4 controller work on PS5?

Yes, the PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller works on the PlayStation 5. However, it won’t work with PS5 games. You’ll only be able to use the DualShock 4 to play supported backward compatible PS4 games on the PS5.

There’s good reason for this: Most PS5 games are designed with the functionality of the DualSense controller in mind. Its new features primarily include adaptive triggers, which are likely to be used in all first-party or exclusive games. The DualSense also has a revamped haptic system which may not be fully compatible with the PS4 controller’s old-school rumble option.

According to a statement posted on the PlayStation.Blog, Sony says “[We] believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean all your old peripherals will become useless. PSVR is fully supported on the PS5, and the old PSVR Move controllers can be used with PS4 PSVR games. In addition, the PlayStation Camera for PS4 will work with the PS5, though it will require a special adapter to function. Otherwise, you can use the new HD Camera. Accessories like headsets, including both wired and wireless options, are fully supported on the new hardware.

Don’t fret: Your old DualShock 4 or officially licensed third-party PS4 controller will work on PS5. Just remember that you won’t be able to use it to play PlayStation 5 exclusive games. For that, you’ll need one of the new DualSense controllers. Luckily, one comes in the box.
