Cruella is the latest upcoming Disney blockbuster, with Emma Stone assuming the role of the 101 Dalmations villain in a new live-action movie. With so many major films and TV shows being released on the company’s streaming service, is Cruella coming to Disney Plus, and if so what will its release date be?
Is Cruella coming to Disney+?
Cruella is one of Disney’s biggest movies of 2021, with it set to be a prequel of the infamous character that shows the beginnings of her fashion career way before she thought about killing puppies.
Given the difficulties in releasing films in theaters in 2021, many have suspected that Cruella will receive a Disney Plus release on May 28, 2021, the film’s release date. This would be a huge boon for the Disney+ service, providing another solid blockbuster in its already stacked library.
With that being said, Disney has not confirmed that Cruella will be made available on the streaming service on this date. While it is an inevitability that it will release on the platform at some point in the future, it’s unclear if it will have a joint theatrical and streaming release.
The reality is that Disney is likely waiting to see how theaters are faring closer to May. As we’ve seen with Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, even the most highly anticipated of films have struggled with theatrical releases due to the pandemic. Disney wouldn’t want to roll Cruella out in theaters only for its profits to be hindered, so the film could be released on Disney Plus to ensure that won’t happen.
Cruella has already been delayed from December 2020 into May 2021 as a result of the pandemic, so plans for the movie could still change this year. While many will be hoping to see the film in theaters, many more will be hoping that the film will launch on the subscription service.
In other entertainment news, rumors recently circulated that Gina Carano could be replaced in The Mandalorian. WandaVision fans also tried to decipher the theories behind the show’s latest episode.
