A Borderlands 4 release date is an inevitability. The immensely popular franchise only gets bigger with each entry, and Gearbox knows it’s going to make a ton of money. So, we’ll definitely see a new Borderlands game, the only question is when. We’ll take a look at possible release timing and platforms below.
What’s the Borderlands 4 release date?
Gearbox hasn’t officially announced a Borderlands 4 release date. The studio hasn’t confirmed the game is even in development. However, each Borderlands game has started pre-production almost immediately after the previous once launched, so it’s almost a certainty that preliminary work is being done on the game at the very least.
It’s likely that if Borderlands 4 isn’t in full development yet, it will be after Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands releases on March 25, 2022. Right now, that’s the only game the studio has announced, so after it launches, Gearbox’s slate should be fairly clean. There was about 4-5 years between each main Borderlands game, so we hypothesize Borderlands 4 will launch in 2023-2024.
However, since Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a spinoff of Borderlands, it’ll contain a lot of the same signature humor and gameplay, albeit in a western fantasy setting. Some players might not care for the addition of melee weapons, but it will include the same zany procedurally generated loot as the main series games. It’s not clear what, if any, effect the game will have on the overall lore. Tiny Tina is playing the role of a dungeon master, but we may see other characters from the Borderlands series appear as well.
What platforms is it coming out on?
Borderlands 4’s release date is likely far enough out that it’s not likely to be a cross-gen title. We foresee it coming out on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
