Getting Meltan and evolving it into Melmetal is one of the most challenging tasks in Pokemon Go. Meltan doesn’t spawn under normal circumstances, and it takes an enormous amount of Meltan Candy to evolve it. Fortunately, there are still two methods to get Meltan and Melmetal in 2023, but they both take some time and effort to pull off.
The easy way to get Meltan and Melmetal in Pokemon Go: The Mystery Box
The easiest way to get Meltan in Pokemon Go is to use the Mystery Box. You can use it once a week from the items screen, and it’ll cause Meltan to spawn in your vicinity for 30 minutes.
If you want to evolve Meltan into Melmetal, you’ll need to catch quite a few Meltan, so make sure you have plenty of Pokemon Storage open ahead of time. Also, you’ll want to use a Pinap Berry on each one to maximize the amount of candy you receive. It should only take a few weeks using this method to get the 400 Meltan Candies you need to evolve one into Melmetal.
There are two ways to get the Mystery Box in Pokemon Go:
- Connect the app to Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu or Eevee
- Connect the app to Pokemon Home
How to connect Pokemon Go to Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu or Eevee
To get the Mystery Box using Pokemon Let’s Go, you’ll need to progress through the game until you reach Fuschia City. Then, follow these instructions:
- Make sure your Bluetooth is enabled on both your Switch and mobile device.
- On your mobile device, launch the Pokemon Go app
- Then go to Settings, then Connected Devices and Services.
- Select Nintendo Switch from the available options.
- On your Switch, launch Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu or Eevee.
- On the main menu, select Options.
- Open the Pokemon Go settings and follow the prompts.
- Make sure your Pokemon Go trainer name appears, and then say yes when asked if you want to receive a Pokemon.
- Choose a Pokemon from Go to send to Let’s Go.
- Make sure it’s not one you’re too attached to since you can’t send it back.
- Travel to Go Park in Fuschia City, and you’ll be able to receive the Pokemon.
Once you grab the Pokemon from Go Park, the Mystery Box will be in your inventory on Pokemon Go.
Connect the app to Pokemon Home
Getting the Mystery Box by connecting Pokemon Home and Pokemon Go is the easiest of the two methods:
- Download Pokemon Home onto your mobile device.
- Launch it and connect your Nintendo account to the app.
- Head into Pokemon Go and then go to Settings.
- In Connected Devices and Services, select Pokemon Home and log into your Nintendo account.
- Go back to Pokemon Home in the Pokemon Go app settings and choose a Pokemon to send over.
Once you send a Pokemon over, you’ll find the Mystery Box in your Pokemon Go inventory.
Ironically, you’ll get a Melmetal in Pokemon Home as a reward for connecting it to Pokemon Go. However, it can’t be traded to Pokemon Go. So, you still need to grind for Meltan Candy if you want a Melmetal in that game.
The hard way to get Meltan and Melmetal in Pokemon Go: Let’s Go, Meltan quest
You can still get Meltan in Pokemon Go without the Mystery Box, but it’s a long road. Additionally, you’ll find evolving Meltan into Melmetal to be practically impossible if you take this route.
Once you catch 100 Pokemon in the Kanto Pokedex, you’ll be assigned the Let’s Go, Meltan Special Research task. This nine-step questline results in you receiving a Meltan, but you’ve gotta be in it for the long haul because it takes a while to complete it.

- Make 20 Great Throws

- Evolve 1 Magnemite

You get a chance to catch Meltan as part of Tier 8, but you won’t have nearly enough Meltan Candy to evolve it to Melmetal. So, if that’s your goal, you’ll still need to get the Mystery Box at some point so you can get a steady supply coming.
