Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order just came to Steam and it is a solid Soulslike game with admittedly more Tomb Raider than FromSoftware DNA. It’s only $30.
A Plague Tale: Innocence is one of the tragically underplayed games of 2019. It may have some oddities here and there, but the $15.29 price is justified for the story and atmosphere alone.
DragonBall FighterZ is an excellent fighting game that is not only for fans of the anime, but for those who also enjoy frenetic fighting mechanics. It’s also a riot to watch. The main game is $14 and the ultimate edition is $27.49.
Mortal Kombat 11 is for you if you want a fighting game but one with not as much anime. Although it may not be the new Aftermath Edition, the main game is $20 and is still an incredible deal since it is so full of solid content.
The Resident Evil 2 remake was the best game of 2019 with its narrow focus on horror and survival. And any time a Game of the Year winner is just $20, it’s at least worth checking out no matter who you are.
Devil May Cry 5 was a solid return to form for the hack and slash series and is at a good price at $20. It also includes some more red orbs if you’re into that sort of thing.
Assassin’s Creed Origins is easily one of the best entries in the series, which is saying a lot. The setting tops even Italy from Ezio’s time and it combines with an engrossing story and lovely world that is worth the $12. The gold edition has all the DLC and is only $20, which is great if you want everything.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is for those who want the RPG kind of Assassin’s Creed but in Ancient Greece. It is more bloated but has many of the same traits as Origins. However, it is more expensive, coming in at $20. The DLC is pretty good, too, but that doubles the price.
Divinity Original Sin 2 is something all CRPG fans should look up given the breadth and quality of its many, many interlocking systems. And for $22.49, it’s a steal.
Hitman 2 is just $18 but the ultimate edition is $30, which is the superior one to grab. It’s quite a deal, especially given how all of the content will transfer over to Hitman 3 when it comes out in January 2021. So not only is it a deep and replayble stealth game, it’s also sort of an investment, too.
Wolfenstein 2 is quality first-person shooter that has all the Nazi-slaying gunplay that you’d want while also containing a surprisingly deep narrative that lets you kill all those SS bastards over and over and over. And for just $12, there’s few deals as solid. The prior two titles — The New Order and The Old Blood — are also incredible and are also on sale for $6 each. The series bundle isn’t quite worth since the Cyberpilot and Youngblood are fine to skip.
Just Cause 4 Ultimate Edition was another underplayed title. It may has some jank here and there, but $20 is one hell of a deal since the traversal and grapple systems are worth that alone.
Dark Souls 3 is the last Souls game we’ll probably see for quite some time. You already know about the series so it would be an odd place to start, but for just $15, it’s a fantastic deal. The deluxe edition is a better deal since it is only a few dollars cheaper and comes with a ton of DLC.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War has a lot of cruft in the early parts of the game. But once it lets you mess with its Nemesis System in the second half of the game, it truly becomes one of the best player-driven narratives in gaming. And you can experience that for just $15. The definitive edition is $18, which is a toss up since most of the DLC is either bad or just fine.
Borderlands 3 might have some grating humor but it’s still a decent looter shooter if you’re into that sort of thing. It’s only $30 and its premium editions are also discounted to $40 and $50, depending on how much you want.
Best Steam Summer Sale Deals 2020 | Older titles
Titanfall 2 also just hit Steam and is one of the best first-person shooters ever made. While its multiplayer is engaging given the interplay of big Titans and small pilots, but the campaign is also a well-paced buddy cop ride that is an easy way to spend a weekend. For $10, it’s a must-buy.
Doom 64 is technically an old game, but you might have missed it. While it may have been slightly derided at the time, it has aged well with its more nuanced level design and better visuals. It’s only $1.49.

Dishonored 2 is an amazing immersive sim. It has two different characters with radically different powers, which changes the game and points out how open its systems truly are. It is deeply replayable and something you can’t miss for $12. And the whole series in one big bundle that is only $23, which is an amazing deal. Dishonored Death of the Outsider is a lot like its two predecessors, but squeezed down into a tighter experience. Since it is shorter and more compact, it would serve as a great litmus test for those unwilling to dive into the second number entry. It’s only $8.
Terraria has been going for quite some time for a reason: it’s a hell of a game. If you like Minecraft-like titles, this might be for you. The game is $5.
Metal Gear Solid 5 is the best open-world stealth game as it is almost endlessly replayable, given its addictive upgrade loop, wide array of gadgets, and deviously smart enemy AI. All of those aspects work together and create some truly personal player stories. Sure, it may not wrap up the series in the best way, but for $7.49, it’s an easy recommendation because of its sublime gameplay.
Batman: Arkham Knight may have been derided for its Batmobile sections near its release, but those don’t totally detract from how amazing the game is. The stealth and combat are at their best here, making the game a blast to play no matter if you’re sneaking or punching. The ending is a perfect send-off for the series, too. It’s just $5, which is well worth it. The premium edition is $10, but is worth it for the excellent skins and criminally underplayed Season of Infamy: Most Wanted that serves as an surprising epilogue. The Rocksteady trilogy is also $15 (which includes all the DLC but excludes Arkham Origins) and worth it if you’ve never played them.
Doom 2016 is without a doubt one of the best shooters ever made. While its sequel is bigger and better in a lot of respects, its predecessor still holds up and for just $6, everyone should jump on board this bullet train to Hell.
Tomb Raider Underworld is an oft-forgotten Tomb Raider and may seem old in some respects, but it is an adventure worth taking, especially for a mere 98 cents.
Far Cry Primal is the most underrated game in the franchise and one of the best. It does have the typical Ubisoft Open-World Formula™ but the prehistoric setting puts just enough of a spin of the core gameplay to make it worthwhile. The hardcore survival mode is worth checking out, too, since it radically changes how you approach the game and makes it more akin to a survival game, hence the title. It’s only $7.49, which probably doesn’t exchange well to caveman money. If you want a more traditional Far Cry game, then Far Cry 4 is a decent deal at $12.
Bioshock is one of the most important games ever made and a journey that should be one everyone’s list. It is only $5 as well as its good, underrated sequel. Bioshock Infinite may have faced some backlash in the recent years but it is still an essential experience. It being only $7.49 is well worth the price. You can get all of them for just $12, which is the best deal.
Dead Island Collection, which includes Dead Island, Riptide, and the off-shoot Retro Rampage, is a janky as hell. But it is still a fun RPG if you want to turn your brain off with some friends and play some Fallout-esque zombie games. The sequel may not be coming for quite some time so this will do, especially at $11.10.
Max Payne 3 is dark, gritty and one of the last linear games Rockstar made. It has many of the typical Rockstar tropes but it’s still a quality game with a focus on narrative that is worth a shot. It’s only $7 and its two Remedy-made predecessors are $3.49 each. Those games haven’t aged well in some respects but they were ahead of their times in other areas.
