Square Enix Files Trademark, Moves to Drop Enix from Name?

Square Enix's business has been down in the dumps lately. Down the shitter. Down the drain. Just plain down! Most gamers feel that once Squaresoft, known for some of the best RPGs ever created, started on this downward spiral ever since they merged with competitor Enix to form Square Enix.

We're guessing even Square Enix thinks this, as they've filed for a new trademark which hints at the company dropping the "Enix" part of their name to become known as simply, "SQUARE".

When the trademark first surfaced, it was believed to be Square Enix's attempt at a Steam- or Origin-like service for Square Enix products. But further analyzing the trademark, the filing mirrors that of their old filing for the Square Enix namesake trademark.

The similarities are definitely there, albeit with a few differences. If there's any publisher that needs to revamp their image, it's Square Enix. This could be the first step in establishing that new image.
