In a press release earlier today, Sega announced its acquisition of mobile developer Demiurge Studios. In addition, the company also invested in two more mobile studios: Ignited Artists and Space Ape Games.
Demiurge is best known for Marvel Puzzle Quest, a popular mobile game for both iOS and Android. A report from GamesBeat reveals that Sega did not acquire the mobile hit, but they do gain access to the engine Demiurge uses for the game.
Haruki Satomi, CEO of SEGA Networks, discussed the decision to acquire and invest in mobile studios and how it aligns with the company's vision.
“We’re constantly evaluating the independent mobile game space for studios that fit our vision of fun, high-quality gameplay experiences,” he said. “Demiurge underscores our commitment to investing in the West and complements our current roster of US and European mobile studios, including Three Rings and Hardlight. In addition, our strategic investments in Ignited Artists and Space Ape Games solidifies our commitment to publishing quality games across the globe.”
This news comes in the wake of Sega of America's decision to downsize and move from San Francisco to Southern California. It's possible Sega plans to shift its focus to mobile games in the coming years.
