Only a month ago, the 3DS was in desperate need of life support. Nintendo responded with their version of a defibrillator, a price drop to $169.99. It seems to have worked, too. 3DS sales picked up immediately, and Nintendo calmed rightfully-upset early adopters with some free games. (Free games are available now.)
It seems as though Nintendo still has some tricks up their sleeve, but it's not clear if that's necessarily a good thing, yet. All will be known soon enough, as Nintendo is holding a pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference in Japan that they're calling "Nintendo 3DS Shinseihin Happyoukai" (ニンテンドー3DS 新製å“発表会), which roughly translates into Nintendo 3DS "new product presentation".
New product? Does that mean that there's already going to be a 3DSi or 3DS XL? Maybe a 3DS without 3D? Or even that rumored 3DS second "circle pad" attachment that usually accurate 01Net rumored a couple weeks ago? I don't think even Nintendo knows for sure what the right move is.
Whatever it may be, we'll be glued to the internet waiting and watching for this announcement when it happens on September 13th in Japan (which will still be September 12th for us). Tokyo Game Show kicks off just two days later.
