Guys, I have no idea how to tell you that there's an Oculus Rift game that sorta simulates what it may have been like inside The World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, so don't ask me.
To make it clear: do not ask me for information about [08:46], which is "a narrative-driven experience designed for virtual reality, which makes you embody an office worker in the North Tower of the World Trade Center during the 9/11 events." I added that hyphen myself. I guess the website team for [08:46] forgot because they were too busy, I don't know, reliving the fucking trauma of September Fucking 11th to think about how a double-worded adjective might take advantage of the services offered by the hyphen? I cannot pretend to know, because I was neither on the dev team nor in a tower during 9/11.
I repeat: I have no idea what to post about this game, so looking to me is useless. The game's website, on the other hand, tells us, "The experience has been developed in three months by a six members team in collaboration with two actors for voice and motion capture acting."
Plus trailer:
I had to sign out of Gmail before looking for images or watching that because I do not need the NSA thinking weird shit about me and the towers. Fuck, that's the last kind of question you need coming up at like the airport security line or something. "I was writing about a video game about it. Yeah. That's what I do. I write about video games like that's a thing people do." Who's gonna believe that? And also that there's one about 9/11? He's just gonna picture Mario (or more appropriately, Sonic) flying a plane into a building. He'll know that sounds fishy, and in the airport, "trouble" is spelled "9-1-1" which is short for "t-h-a-t g-u-y-'-s s-t-o-r-y s-o-u-n-d-e-d n-o-t e-n-t-i-r-e-l-y t-r-u-e a-n-d o-n-l-y t-e-r-r-o-r-i-s-t-s a-r-e a-s-h-a-m-e-d o-f t-h-i-n-g-s."
Also have you heard that song "Hungry for a Holiday" by Bright Eyes? Is there a reference to 9/11 in there?
"Well the big surprise
was televised
on a crowded couch
our eyes grew wide and wet.
Oh yes, it's really such a sad event.
You can't capture this
with camera clicks
no it don't exist
just light on negatives."
That sounds so 9/11, but the rest of it is way about aging and depression. Still, that part just feels like September 11 to me.
I just had to explain this day to some kids who are only nine. They had no idea what I was talking about or why I found it so insane. It took hours because there just are no words.
This game will get a lot of blowback because of its subject matter and exactly what it does, but I think the team's collective heart is in the right place. I can't say for sure because of how speechless I am.
They're probably trying to give an idea what it must have been like right in the middle of the unthinkable. There will be calls for this game to get canceled or shut down by force, but others will say should be made and the market should decide its fate. We have games that glorify all kinds of horrific acts, so the moral ground of such an argument seems a little weak to me. They'll say, I mean. Not me.
There's a demo available, but it looks like you need Oculus Rift DK2 to play it? Welp.
I just wish I could think of anything to say about it. So don't look to GameRevolution to report news of this game's creation, because I can't even get the post started. =/
