The gaming industry is ripe with emotion today following Geoff Keighley's introduction at The Game Awards 2016. In the opening minutes of the two hour long show the host explained why Hideo Kojima was deserving of the Industry Icon award, and equally as important what really happened last year between the widely admired game creator and Konami.
Director Guillermo del Toro is among many who aren't so happy with Konami, who reportedly made Kojima finish the last six months of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's development completely separated from the team, left to rely on a middle-man to communicate.
Del Toro posted the following series of tweets:
VIVA KOJIMA
Well deserved, Kojima-san! Banzai!
Konami cancelling SH after PT is one of the most moronic things I've ever witnessed.
The last tweet in particular already has over 22,000 likes and 11,000 retweets.
Konami's poor treatment of Kojima has been rumored to be in response to his high standards of game creation, which come at a costly price. Konami's poor finances put it in a tough spot where it wanted to wrap up development of Metal Gear Solid V, but it wasn't even close to being in a state that would satisfy Kojima's ambitions.
The situation would result in several negative outcomes for the gaming industry, perhaps the most hurtful of which was the cancelation of Silent Hills, a project Guillermo del Toro was going to work on.
