Sometimes you see a figure that you think just can't be right. That was certainly the case when Guerilla Games announced that Horizon Zero Dawn has become the PS4's best-selling exclusive new IP.
Surpassing 2.6 million in global sales, it's certainly a believable figure, but the key that makes its context believable is "new IP." That excludes the most recent hot-seller on the PS4, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
That's not to take away from the success of Horizon Zero Dawn or Guerilla Games, as they've truly crafted something unique that resonates with a lot of people. Not to mention that, even counting old IPs, Horizon Zero Dawn is the second-best-selling first-party PS4 game, even exceeded the likes of The Last of Us: Remastered.
This record for new IPs could also stand for a very long time. Major exclusives are on the horizon, no pun intended, for the PS4, but very few of them are new IPs. Titles like God of War and The Last of Us 2 may certainly surpass that 2.6 million number and then some, but they are both riding the coattails of their predecessors.
What would really be impressive is if Horizon Zero Dawn can pass the PS3 record set by the original The Last of Us, which sold over 7 million copies as an exclusive new IP. At any rate, I think congratulations are still in order.
