PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Is Coming To Console, Xbox One Version Prioritized

2017 has been rich with gaming surprises, none more extraordinary than the success of PC exclusive PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Developed by a lesser-known Korean development studio named Bluehole, Inc. who previously had no shooter experience, it has quickly become one of the world's elite, selling over two million copies, and remaining a top three title on Twitch and Steam's top-seller list since its debut in March.

Though the game is currently in Early Access, it has all the qualities of a complete experience: satisfying gameplay, vibrant visuals, and hundreds of hours of play value. And as it marches toward its full debut, it's bringing a console port along with it.

Speaking to Business Insider, creative director Brendan Greene shared the team's interest in pursuing console ports of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, going as far as saying, "We have a team working already on looking to port it to at least the Xbox [One]" When asked about timing, he gave no specific time frame but did make an end of 2017 release sound possible.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is the latest from a wave of last-man standing shooters which place dozens of players on a large open-world map with little to no equipment and task them with surviving against one another. It's a genre that has seen incredible popularity in the realm of PC gaming, but has yet to fully embrace consoles.

With consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One housing install bases in the tens of millions, Bluehole, Inc. sees a huge opportunity to expand on its success, and open the experience up to gamers who currently have no means of playing the game on PC, where its system requirements are steep.

For now, Bluehole, Inc. is focused on patching the title on a weekly basis. It is also hosting a charity today where it will match donations with a goal of $100,000.
