Online Pass Coming to Battlefield 3 (DUH)

DICE's Alan Kertz sent word out to a Twitter follower today that an online pass would be available for purchase should you decide to buy a used copy of Battlefield 3. As expected, Electronic Arts will slip a unique code into every new copy of the upcoming multiplayer-focused shooter.

EA's Project $10 slowly transformed itself into Project $15 and again into a online pass network where users are required to buy new copies of an EA game in order to play online. The biggest formula change in EA's portfolio has easily been the EA Sports label where Madden, Tiger Woods, and FIFA franchises now require codes to play online.

As much as I feel the pain of anyone trying to save a buck, I'd rather have new copies of my games anyway. Was Battlefield 3's online pass surprising at all?
