Think Kickstarter is only for college kids with half-baked ideas? Think again. New game developer Double Fine decided to attempt funding for their very first game by launching a Kickstarter campaign. Run by Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert, the campaign asked for donations of $400,000 to fund a new point-and-click adventure game.
The gaming community blew that goal right out of the water. As of the time of this writing, the Kickstarter campaign has raised over $625,000. Mind you, the campaign started YESTERDAY (February 8, 2012).
While a majority of this funding came from actual gamers, according to Develop, a chunk of change came from other big name game developers. How big of names? How about Markus "Notch" Persson of Minecraft fame, 3DRealms' George Broussard, Mike Acton of Insomniac, Bastion creative director Greg Kasavin, and Amy Hennig of Naughty Dog. Felicia Day even tossed a few coins into the well.
I can't believe that so much money has been invested into a game we really know nothing about except that Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert are behind it. Either way, it will be very interesting to see what develops, and if other game developers will try a similar campaign. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason why this campaign was so successful was because of Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert's names.
