Killzone 3 Multiplayer Goes Free-To-Play… To A Point

Do you need an outlet with which to let out all your anger, frustration, and… what the… all of a sudden my trigger-finger got a little itchy there. Maybe it's because it already knows that Killzone 3's Multiplayer portion will be available on PSN next week as a standalone, free-to-play downloadable.

The multiplayer will be separated from the Single-Player campaign and comes complete with a year's worth of DLC maps for free. Developers Guerilla Games state that:

You can play any of the maps and modes until you reach the rank of Sergeant I. If you want to keep playing, attain higher ranks, and earn any of the Killzone 3 multiplayer's four exclusive new trophies, you can unlock the full version for only $15.

Soooo… kind of like an online pass scheme then huh?

I'll be honest, I'm not one for Killzone. I've got the second game but I haven't played more than an hourof the single-player and next to 0 minutes, 0 seconds on the multiplayer. Still, I think this is a smart move by both Sony and Guerilla.

It'll reignite the online community, meaning the original owners of the game will continue to enjoy the competitive side of things and it'll refresh the title in everyone's minds so that when Sony unveils the inevitable Killzone 4 or Killzone Vita, it'll make a lot more sense.
