This year marks the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy, and Square Enix plans to celebrate the occasion by announcing the long awaited Final Fantasy VII remake something Final Fantasy XIII related. Now before you get your hopes up, just know that it probably won't involve Versus XIII. I know, I know, it pains me as well, but a rumor from Kotaku indicates that the long awaited spinoff has been cancelled.
According to the report, "several sources" have told the outlet that Square plans to downplay the game's cancellation and bring the Versus XIII staff on to aid in the development of Final Fantasy XV, which is currently rumored to be in development for current generation consoles.
That said, you can expect hear something major about Square's polarizing Final Fantasy XIII franchise when they make a few announcements regarding what's next, during their anniversary event on September 1st. I hate to string you along, but since Square has yet to confirm the cancellation of FF Versus XIII, I guess there's still a shred of hope that the game is alive and will be shown at the event, but I wouldn't count on it.
All signs point to the disheartening reality that Versus XIII is dead. Please Square, torture us no more and make it official.
