Mario and Zelda are two of the most powerful franchises in the video game industry and a huge reason why Nintendo has been so successful all these years. That said, the company hasn't been able to create many new IPs that resonate with gamers like their handful of old mainstays. As such, the CEO of Ngmoco, Neil Young believes that Nintendo is destined to "collapse".
In an interview with Gamasutra, Young explained that because there are only a few of compelling Nintendo franchises, the company's days as a hardware giant are numbered. “The ecosystem that they’ve created, it’s just really difficult to justify spending 30 dollars on a game that is anything other than a Mario, a Zelda, a Pokemon. I think that ultimately their ecosystem starts to fall apart.”
$30? Unless Mr. Young is looking in the bargain bin at 3-4 year-old titles, he'd be hard pressed to find any of Nintendo's signature games for under $40 or $50. Oddly enough this only furthers his point. So that begs the question, will Nintendo eventually be forced to move out of the hardware space and focus solely on software as a third-party publisher?
