Junkertown has been detailed by Blizzard in a new Overwatch map preview, with Jeff Kaplan and co. offering us a closer look at what we can expect to see when we finally venture into the new arena later this morning.
The map, set in Junkrat and Roadhog’s home country of Australia, has a grungy vibe that’s more than a little reminiscent of fellow Aussie blockbuster Mad Max. An escort map, players will be tasked with pushing the Payload to its destination, with the stage divided into unique areas that will each present their own challenges for both attackers and defenders.
The map begins in the outskirts of Junkertown in Roadhog’s farm, with few vantage points and all the action mostly taking place on the ground between its run-down buildings. As the map progresses it becomes more “high fantasy,” according to Blizzard, with game director Jeff Kaplan describing the next segment as his favorite section of the stage, with it featuring the abandoned Junkertown and its various ramshackle establishments. Then there’s the scrap yard, a gladiatorial arena with a rotating turbine spinning above it that players can battle across.

Kaplan added that he hopes Junkertown will be the “tip of the iceberg” for what we can expect from Junkrat, Roadhog and the rest of the Junkers, with them having been largely overlooked in Overwatch thus far. It remains to be seen whether or not this will mean we’ll see more maps based upon them in the see, or if we’ll see another Australian hero added to the game, but for now Junkertown looks like it’s set to be one of the most fun maps added to the game thus far.
Junkertown is set to be added to Overwatch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on September 19. Check out the map preview below:
