Blizzard has created a $10 pet in World of Warcraft that players can adopt in order to contribute to a disaster relief fund, with donations helping those affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Arma, flooding in South Asia and “countless other crises.”
Shadow the fox can be purchased from both World of Warcraft‘s in-game Shop and the Blizzard Shop, with 100% of the proceeds raised by his adoption going towards disaster relief charities both domestic and international. Discussing the charity pet, Blizzard released the following statement:
“For every Shadow fox adopted between now and December 31, 2017, 100% of the $10 USD adoption fee will be donated to both American Red Cross Disaster Relief and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Disaster Relief Fund. Your donation will be split equally between both organizations: for the American Red Cross to help people affected by disasters big and small in the U.S., and the IFRC to help Red Cross Red Crescent Societies respond to disasters through their Disaster Relief Emergency fund.”

In the description of the new pet, Blizzard writes that it will “use its cunning to shift its way through Shadow and Light directly into your heart and home.”
The charity pet will remain available between September 12 and December 31, with proceeds being split equally between both charity organizations. After purchasing the fox, it will be applied to all present and future characters on a single Blizzard account, and will appear in each character’s pet and mount journal. It can also be used in pet battles, the combat mini-game in which players can pit their pets against one another.
There have been multiple charity pets released during World of Warcraft‘s life time, including the cat-like Mischief who was debuted last year in support of the Make-A-Wish foundation. Sales of Mischief eventually earned the foundation $1 million.
