Sony Announces a Brand New PlayStation VR Headset

Sony has announced that it will be releasing a brand new model of the PlayStation VR headset, with the updated version including a slimmer connection cable and allowing for easier headphone integration.

Sony made the surprising announcement in a blog post today, with the new PlayStation VR model — referred to internally as CUH-ZVR2 — set to be packaged in a new box, with it also boasting a new Processor Unit supporting HDR pass-through, ensuring that PS4 users can now enjoy HDR-compatible content on the console without having to disconnect it.

Discussing the differences between the new and old PS VR model, Sony wrote:

“A hardware update to PlayStation VR is being prepared. The new version, model number CUH-ZVR2, features an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable. There’s also an updated Processor Unit that supports HDR pass through, enabling users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on a TV without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system. This function can be used only when the VR headset is turned off.”

Unfortunately, those who already own the PS VR won’t be able to simply swap out the Processor Unit, with the updated unit only compatible with the new unit. All existing PS VR games will work on the new model, and the pricing of the headset will remain the same.
