Lawbreakers Free-to-Play, multiplayer

LawBreakers Is Now Free-to-Play

Remember LawBreakers? It was the game that was supposed to be Boss Key Productions’ ticket to the big leagues. Alas, it was not meant to be. Studio founder Cliff Bleszinski announced just last month that the company has shut down. Today, as we were all busy with E3 2018, the game’s Steam page showed that the game has gone free-to-play, despite the developer’s insistence that it won’t happen. To be fair, that was all before Radical Heights.

LawBreakers: Lives On As A Free-To-Play Game

According to the LawBreaker‘s official Steam page, the game is now free-to-play. Boss Key Productions stated earlier in April 2018 that moving the game to a free-to-play business model would “take publishing planning and resources.” The developer still had lofty plans for a new game back then, which turned out to be Radical Heights.

In that very same month, Boss Key Productions officially announced Radical Heights, which aimed to cash in on the battle royale phenomenon and crazy money enjoyed by other games like PUBG and Fortnite. It was a little bit too late, as the following month Cliff Bleszinski revealed that the studio is “effectively no more.”

In a statement posted on Twitter, Bleszinski said: “LawBreakers was a great game that unfortunately failed to gain traction, and in a last-ditch attempt we scrambled to do our take on the huge battle royale genre with Radical Heights which was received well, however it was too little too late.”

He then confirmed that the servers for Radical Heights will be maintained for the near future. Unfortunately, he didn’t mention anything about LawBreakers. Now that the game has unexpectedly gone free-to-play, the servers may stay up and running for a while longer. It’s a shame, we gave the game a rating of 4 out of 5 in our review, describing it as “the best shooter you probably won’t play.” If the world didn’t become so enamored with battle royale games, LawBreakers could have enjoyed better success.
