You read that right. The live-streaming service will be adding games to its system, though Netflix games will not be the traditional sort, so if you’re already planning to call Netflix support and ask to play the next Battlefield on there, we fear you’ll only leave that conversation feeling disappointed. However, if you’re a fan of Telltale games you may be happy to hear that the service will be taking advantage of the studio’s narrative-focused game design.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement, Netflix’s clarification to some of TechRadar’s, the website who first broke the news, information is arguably confirmation enough that Netflix will be adding Telltale’s games to its service. But which game from Telltale will they be adding first?
In their answer to TechRadar, Netflix states, “we can confirm Minecraft: Story Mode is a licensed 5-episode interactive narrative series coming to our service this fall.” They continue, “It’s an extension of our other interactive stories we have on our service like Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile.”
This collaboration between Netflix and Telltale may come as a surprise for some, though if you’ve been following Telltale closely you’ll already be aware that the studio has expressed their desire to work with the streaming service several times before. It looks as though they’ve finally got their wish, even if that means the possibility of stripping away some features that their original games have.
So does this mean Netflix will be branching out into video games themselves in the future? Apparently not. In yet another statement to TechRadar, they say, “we don’t have any plans to get into gaming. There’s a broad spectrum of entertainment available today. Games have become increasingly cinematic, but we view this as interactive narrative storytelling on our service.”
While it hasn’t been confirmed how games will work on Netflix, we’re more than eager to find out when it is officially announced by the live-streaming service.
