Nintendo Considering Connectivity Between 3DS And Wii U

Mario mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto recently addressed a question that has been on the minds of Nintendo fans ever since the Wii U was first announced: Will there be connectivity between the new console and the 3DS?

Unfortunately, the response wasn't a simple yes or no. After all, this is Nintendo we're talking about—a company infamous for not being all that straightforward. Speaking to IGN, Miyamoto explained:

Of course we are thinking of the possibility of connecting Wii U and Nintendo 3DS once again. [But] we have challenged connectivity on many occasions, and one of the great lessons we have learned is the simple fact that those who own both are much fewer than those who don’t own both.

So what we decided early on when considering the Wii U design was that we had to make it so that every single purchaser of the Wii U is going to have the same play conditions, the same equipment.

In addition to this major obstacle, there is also the issue of dealing with so many screens. “If we are going to do that with Wii U and 3DS, there would be three screens to consider,” Miyamoto added. There's no doubt that this could introduce some cool new gameplay options, but at the same time, creating compelling experiences that really take advantage of this feature could prove to be quite challenging.
