Rumor: A James Gunn Bloodborne Movie May Release This Year

A Bloodborne movie could release in the next few months if speculation turns out to be true, and James Gunn could be the man behind it. It’s been a wild few months for the former Guardians of the Galaxy director. His firing from Disney and Marvel Studios could be to blame for his next movie coming out of the blue, but potentially focusing on the popular 2015 PS4 exclusive game could also help with headlines.

Sony’s upcoming release schedule mentions that an as-of-yet untitled horror movie from James Gunn is set to release this November, with the legendary picture house even re-confirming the plans to Screen Rant when asked. The creatively named “Untitled James Gunn Horror Movie” was known to exist in some capacity already, but its scheduled reveal at SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con) was canceled at the last minute when the director was fired by Disney as distasteful old tweets emerged from the woodwork.

So while we still have very little to go on as to what James Gunn’s upcoming movie could be, recent stirrings still suggest that it could be a Bloodborne movie adaption. Other whisperings include an adaption of the popular (and violent) Berserk manga, or even that of the Grant Morrison graphic novel series Nameless. Gunn made a name for himself with the horror genre, so seeing him back there wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

But as Screen Rant pointed out, signs do suggest a Bloodborne movie being revealed as James Gunn’s latest project. Around a month ago, James posted an ambiguous tease to Twitter (which is still pinned) with the SDCC hashtag.

The image of a rune or symbol drew comparisons to that of the Heir rune from the FromSoftware’s 2015 hit RPG Bloodborne, causing some to speculate that James was working on a movie based on the game. After all, it would be Sony, who still has exclusivity rights over the PS4 title, putting out the picture. The symbol is strikingly similar to the graphic novel Nameless, too, so this really could go either way at the moment.

There’s a lot to take into consideration at the moment, but Sony isn’t completely canning a movie over Gunn’s recent bad press. We’re expecting next to no marketing for the flick similar to how Kevin Spacey’s Billionaire Boys Club was silently released following allegations of abuse. We still don’t know for sure what this untitled movie is, but it’s coming November 30 whether we want it or not.
