Ever since Sony Santa Monica was formed several years ago, the studio's internal team has only made God of War games. While there's no doubt that the team is fully capable of making something entirely new, they've refrained from doing so.
Studio director Shannon Studstill explained the reasoning behind this decision, admitting that after work finished on God of War III, the team actually considering working on something that wasn't Kratos-related before opting to create Ascension. Of course, the fact that the brand has some serious selling power was a determining factor as Studstill cited both "creative reasons and business reasons" for sticking with the franchise.
On the creative front, the team has looked at Ascension as an opportunity to improve upon the systems of the core game, while also adding in multiplayer. "I think for the single-player game, there were systems that we wanted to enhance," she explained. "Not to diss God of War III, as that was tough to go from PS2 to PS3, but our focus for God of War III was very tools and engine-focused. And now what we're trying to do is catch up a bit in terms of systems we wanted to improve upon."
