David Cage Admits Quantic Dream Is “Crazy” For Creating New Engine For Beyond: Two Souls

While sticking with the Heavy Rain engine would have been a far more reasonable move from a business perspective, David Cage and his team at Quantic Dream wanted to raise the bar even further for interactive storytelling with Beyond: Two Souls, so his existing tech simply wouldn't cut it.

As such, the team pushed rational thinking aside and built a brand-new engine that blows the studio's prior efforts out of the water. Naturally, artistic integrity often comes at a price; in this case, a certain level of sanity.

"Does it make sense from a company point of view? Not really, to be honest. Being the CEO of the company, I can tell you that it’s totally absurd," David Cage said to Shacknews when discussing the creation of Beyond Two Souls' new engine. "But we enjoy it so much. We’re a team of passionate people. This is ‘what we should have done,’ but we’ve done something else."

He went on to add: "We’re just crazy people. We don’t do this for money or fame. We want to take risks because we enjoy trying to push the envelope."
