Zelda For Wii U Announced, Nintendo “Returning To Basics”

While still likely quite a ways away from release, Nintendo has revealed that they are working on a Zelda title for the Wii U. This news should hardly come as a surprise to anyone with a brain, but it is a bit shocking that they've decided to spill the beans before E3.

Series producer Eiji Aonuma didn't offer too many specific details regarding this new HD Zelda, but he did hint at the direction in which they are headed. The studio is "rethinking the conventions of Zelda," so the idea of having to progress through certain dungeons in a specific order or making the experience single-player-only are being re-examined. In addition, Aonuma noted that they will be "returning to basics," with the ultimate goal to be for this new game to serve as a sort of reboot for the series.

As far as the visual style goes, that pretty image you see above taken from E3 2011 will in fact not look anything like the final game (I'm crying inside), but will instead feature a "new style" that is completely unlike what was teased two years ago.

It will likely be a while until we hear more about this new Zelda title, as it's clear Nintendo is still in the very early stages of development. In the meantime, sound off in the comments below and tell us what changes you'd like to see implemented in this new Zelda.
