There were plans for some God of War DLC but the ideas were shelved after being deemed “too ambitious,” director Cory Barlog revealed during a recent interview. The God of War developer confirmed last year that the game wouldn’t be receiving and expansions for it. Though Santa Monica Studios has already started hiring for what looks to be a sequel to God of War.
It’s one of the few games in recent times that most people would have happily parted with extra cash for a new chapter, but God of War director, Cory Barlog, said that the proposals put forward were “too ambitious.”
Speaking on an episode of The GameOverGreggy Show, Barlog explained that while it was something he wanted to do, the ideas he had were, in scope, “it was like a Left Behind, like a Lost Legacy, it would’ve been its own thing.” He continued that his proposals were met with people telling him “this is crazy, this isn’t DLC, this is a little too big.” Barlog wasn’t too down about it though, saying that what launched was “everything,” and Barlog has said that it was only the absence of the game’s Photo Mode and New Game Plus at launch that annoyed him.
Barlog didn’t follow up on what this proposed DLC was about unfortunately, nor did he discuss whether we’d see a similar half game release for God of War as we got in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy or Dishonored: Death of the Outsider but it seems unlikely that the studio would choose to go in that direction.
Though it’s not all bad news, a job listing spotted on the Santa Monica website is looking for a concept artist who can “create a high-quality characters, gods, creatures, and props,” which suggests that the design for a God of War sequel is already underway.
