Eidos "life president" Ian Livingstone had some very interesting things to say about the next generation of gaming, especially in regards to Microsoft's future plans.
In an interview with MCV India, Livingstone appeared fairly certain that Microsoft will try to prohibit consumers from buying used games as we move toward a digital-only future. “I think the next iteration of consoles – the PS4 and the next Xbox, have got optical disc drives even though they probably don’t want to have them. Broadband speed globally isn’t at a level that justifies digital-only,” he explained.
“So they’ve gone halfway. With the next Xbox, you supposedly have to have an internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won’t play on another. So I think the generation after that will be digital-only,” Livingstone added.
Watermarked discs, you say? That's interesting. Hopefully we'll hear more about this and with the rest of Microsoft's next-gen plans in the very near future.
