The new Apple streaming service was announced during today’s stream. The service is called Apple TV and the company has yet to reveal how much it will cost. The Apple TV streaming app will offer Apple’s own in-house productions as well as services that can be bundled for a nominal fee.
The Apple TV+ app is just the latest streaming service to be debuted by a major, established company, and stands to compete with Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Netflix as a provider of both original and syndicated content. Apple’s service takes a page from Amazon by offering individual services and bundles in addition to the content you get from a basic subscription.
Apple reportedly alotted $1 billion for original content for its streaming service, and we’re just now getting to see that come to fruition. It has managed to snag directors like J.J. Abrams and Stephen Spielberg for projects, and we may finally be seeing original streaming content rivaling Hollywood productions.
We don’t have a full schedule for the premiere of Apple’s original productions on Apple TV, but we did get a sneak peek at what’s in store. Given how impressive Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon’s original lineup has been though, it’s going to be a battle to hook customers who are already invested in series like Stranger Things, The Man in the High Castle, and The Handmaid’s Tale.
The new Apple TV app release date is May 2019 and will initially be available on MacOS and iOS devices as well as smart TVs, Roku, and Amazon Fire devices.
