E3 2019 | The Division Netflix film announced, stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain

The Division Netflix film has been announced, with the upcoming film set to star Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain. The film was announced at the Ubisoft E3 2019 conference, with it set to follow similar events to the game series, including an epidemic that leaves humanity on its last legs.

The film adaptation is set to be directed by David Leitch, and will take place in the near future in a post-apocalyptic world. According to information shared by The Wrap, its plot centers around a pandemic virus that spreads via paper money on Black Friday, decimating the population. A group of civilians, presumably including Gyllenhaal and Chastain’s characters, are enlisted to help save whatever is left of humanity.

The Division is in capable hands with Leitch in control, with the director having previously been responsible for the likes of Deadpool 2 and the Charlize Theron action film Atomic Blonde. He also served as produced on John Wick, and directed this year’s Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham. Gyllenhaal and Chastain’s respective production company will also be responsible for producing the film.

Video game adaptations don’t have a particularly storied history, with this year’s Detective Pikachu being the first to release to a positive critical and consumer reception. It’s unclear if The Division film will also help to break that trend, though there are certainly talented people aligned to the project. Gyllenhaal is also no stranger to game adaptations, having previously starred in Prince of Persia.

No release date has been given for the film, though we should receive more information sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Keep it tuned to GameRevolution for E3 2019 updates as and when they happen.
