Microsoft Patents Remakes Supporting Concurrent Engines

The folks over at Microsoft have filed a patent for a game "having a plurality of game engines" running at the same time.

We first saw this implemented in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, which allowed the player to immediately flip between the game's original graphics and improved HD graphics. It has proven to be an impressive bit of technology, and something I hope to see them continue to use as we enter the next generation of gaming.

With expectations running high for an HD version of Halo 2, it makes sense that Microsoft would want to lock down this tech for itself. Are you excited at the potential of more remakes along these lines? How awesome would a Microsoft-published Final Fantasy VII remake be with this treatment? Let us know in the comments below.
