New Gran Turismo games to target ‘120 FPS or even 240 FPS’ over higher resolutions

If you’re serious about your racing games, you’ll know the benefits of playing at a higher frame-rate. While 30 FPS is certainly playable, you really need to experience 60 FPS or above to fully enjoy responsive controls and smoother visuals. With racing games, like with first-person shooters, frames help to win games. Thankfully, Polyphonic Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi has his priorities down, as he is looking to target higher frame-rates in new Gran Turismo games.

While speaking during a roundtable discussion with local Australian media, Yamauchi said: “I think, display resolution-wise, 4K resolution is enough.” He then went on to talk about leveraging the increased power of the PlayStation 5 to target frame-rate, instead of resolution:

“Rather than a spatial resolution that you’re talking about, I’m more interested in the advancements we can make in terms of the time resolution. In terms of frames per second, rather than staying at 60 fps, I’m more interested in raising it to 120 fps or even 240 fps. I think that’s what’s going to be changing the experience from here on forward.”

It hasn’t yet been confirmed whether or not GT Sport will be making the leap across to PS5. If it does, perhaps we can expect to see frame-rates pushing above the PS4 Pro’s 60 FPS. Failing that, there’s always the next Gran Turismo game, which we’ll hopefully hear more about sooner, rather than later!
