Nintendo Announces Wii Successor

While it had a few great titles, the Wii abandoned core gamers for the most part, profiting off of Wii Fit-loving casual gamers. Next year, Nintendo intends to make amends and support both core and casual gamers with their latest console.

The Wii U will not only be more powerful than the Wii—with early demos showing PS3/360 level quality—but the controller itself will act as a screen. Sporting a 6.2" touch screen, it will be used for new dual-screen gameplay, or allow you to play games on your Wii U while your TV is being used for something else.

Nintendo also announced a whole slew of third party core games that should whet any gamer's appetite:
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Darksiders 2
  • Tekken
  • Assassin’s Creed
  • Ninja Gaiden 3
  • Dirt
  • Ghost Recon Online
  • Metro: Last Light
  • Aliens Colonial Marines

Full specs have yet to be revealed, but it will include "Multicore-based IBM Power" and support 1080p. Previous Wii peripherals will all work with the U, and it will be fully compatible with Wii games.
