NetherRealm Studios Working on Next Mortal Kombat

After nearly a decade without a hardcore fan-worthy release, this year’s Mortal Kombat has restored the franchise to greatness. The game sold over a million copies in its first month on the market, and has reignited the Mortal Kombat craze that once was.

Thanks to this success, you can expect another Mortal Kombat soon enough, as series creator Ed Boon has let it slip on Twitter that the story team is already working on the next game.

If you’re played the new Mortal Kombat story mode, which is a retelling of the first three original MK titles (you know, the good ones), then you would know that the timeline has changed quite a bit (I’d warn of spoilers, but if you didn’t play the new MK, then fuck you). This means that the story in Mortal Kombat 4 may not be where NetherRealm Studios is taking the next title, which Boon confirms in a separate tweet in response to a fan asking that very question.

No Mortal Kombat 4 for the next game? Good. Aside from releasing a Mortal Kombat that felt like MK of old, the best thing NetherRealm did was to change the timeline – everything after Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 sucked anyway. Now they’re free to take the timeline in any direction they want, or where the fans want.

As long as they don’t drop all of the fan-favorite staple characters or change the new (read: old) fighting mechanics, then they’re sure to have another hit on their blood-stained hands.
