While the silly name may be a point of contention among fans, Nintendo's "New" 3DS is selling quite well in Japan. In fact, the New Nintendo 3DS managed to surpass 230,000 in sales during its first week on store shelves.
According to Famitsu (via NeoGAF), the XL model was the version of choice among consumers, moving 172,332 units. Meanwhile, the standard version, which may be a bit smaller but also supports swappable faceplates, sold 61,151 copies.
I'm sure to no one's surprise, Monster Hunter 4G was the big seller software-wise, with a whopping 617,949 in sales.
Nintendo has yet to announce when the New Nintendo 3DS will be coming to North America, but I'm really hoping it's sooner rather than later. Keep your fingers crossed for an early 2015 release, folks!
