Last week, GameRevolution brought you the Top Ten Kickstarter projects that were currently in the midst of active campaigns. But Kickstarter is just one method of creating new concepts for games. Developers pull inspiration and ideas from a multitude of sources, such as movies, television, other video games, and even current events.
The trade-off between crowdfunded titles and traditionally-developed titles lies in the fact that at least with crowdfunded titles, developers have an early idea if their inspiration will carry weight with the gamersphere. We did some serious digging, and found ten intriguing concepts that went the route of traditional development, for better or for worse. Let us know if any of these ideas spark something inside of you.
Top Ten Games in Early Development You Should Know About
APRIL FOOL\'S!!!
Oh, yeah. We did all that right there. Happy April Fool's Day from the GameRevolution staff! We hope you got some solid LOLs out of this (and we don't mean League of Legends ). And, hey, you never know – the game industry is a wacky business; maybe someday we will see one of these pop up. rn rnHopefully not, though. Now go and make someone else laugh today. We'll be here when you get back. No foolin'!
Electric Daisy Carnival: The Game
Synesthesia, the concept of two or more senses overlapping, has intrigued developers for a while now, with oddball titles like Rez and FantaVision succeeding in the past. rn rnSuch is the purpose of Electric Daisy Carnival: The Game . In fact, the point of the game is to create that sensation by making sure the player character doesn't make that sensation happen by illicit means. In EDC: The Game , players will need to “feel the music” amid a huge crowd of party-goers, matching the dubstep beats while not hitting any speedballs or mollies around the dance festival. rn rnSkilled players will be rewarded with bonus rounds in the form of mini-games where the challenge is cramming seven people into one hotel room without being caught or throwing up from too much partying.
Floyd Mayweather\'s Punch-Out!!
Nintendo's Punch-Out!! series has experienced somewhat of a revival with the inclusion of Little Mac in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS . Apparently it's been enough to spur some development on a new iteration of the series. Falling back on what worked in the late '80s, Nintendo has come to an agreement with Floyd Mayweather Jr. to release Floyd Mayweather's Punch-Out!! rn rnThe game will include strategy elements as players have to make wise decisions to cherry-pick the least risky opponent while avoiding the grasp of the IRS. Inside sources say once players reach the last fight, it will actually take about six years to make it to the opening bell.
Kim Kardashian 2: The Search for Sanity
Action-style battles may be what's en vogue for console RPGs, but turn-based RPGs still find life on mobile devices. Following up the surprise mobile hit Kim Kardashian: Hollywood , the studio is in the early stages of development on a sequel, Kim Kardashian 2: The Search for Sanity . rn rnPlayers will control Kim and a party of three others looking for the magic element known only as Reality, which once was plentiful in their kingdom of Teevee. Rumored characters that can join your party: Kourtney and Khloe (who will most likely fill a tank role), Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes, and Justin Bieber. Inside sources also say Kanye West will take on a villainous role.
Mickey and the Magical Measles
What's more fun than a day at the Happiest Place on Earth? Mixing in dangerous, yet fully preventable diseases! In the upcoming Mickey and the Magical Measles , players control the world's most famous mouse, as well as his pals Donald, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, and others throughout Disneyland and Disney California Adventure searching for kids whose parents for whatever reason decided to not vaccinate them. Mickey and friends will need to take those children to parkside doctors who know actual science things, then return to the park to find the parents again and slap the stupid right out of them.
Naked and Afraid
The Kinect 2.0 is technologically so much more capable than its older sister, Kinect for Xbox 360, and the device has shone in music and rhythm games, but sports and activity games have fallen a bit flat. This is where the developers of Naked and Afraid hope to step in. rn rnBased on the surprise Discovery Channel hit, Naked and Afraid pits teams of two, either local co-op or matched up via Xbox Live, into a “survivalist” situation, with mini-challenges on Survivor -like needs like building fire and shelter, or finding food. Players must work together to survive. rn rnThe catch on this game: Centered around Kinect 2.0's ability to sense heat via infrared sensors, gameplay cannot start or continue until the player is completely naked in front of it.
Pokémon WhiteGold & BlackBlue
Wait, you saw that, right? RIGHT? It's like the game changes before your very eyes. What kind of demon sorcery is this??
Ted Cruz\'s Campaign Tycoon
The presidential race of 2016 has already officially started, and with it comes all the virtual ways gamers can get involved in the gamersphere. First out the gate is Ted Cruz's Campaign Tycoon , where players play as the campaign director for Texas Senator Ted Cruz as he aims for the White House. Players will have to spout bat-sh*t crazy theories in order to alienate as many groups as possible; keeping it too normal will cost Senator Cruz valuable donations from lunatic Tea Partiers. rn rnDevelopers state that there will be an upper limit to the amount of crazy Senator Cruz will be able to espouse, though nobody knows what that limit is yet.
The Last Guardian
Okay, really, now I know someone's pulling our le– rn rnWait... I see what's happening here. I'm betting on the next slide....
Where in the World is My Goddamn Sandwich?
One of the more intriguing rumors is that Brøderbund will make a comeback to major PC gaming. According to reports, the studio realizes that things have changed in the PC gaming universe, and therefore intend to start on a smaller scale that many people can connect to more readily. Using the framework from its smash hit Carmen Sandiego franchise, Brøderbund has started development on Where in the World is My Goddamn Sandwich? rn rnPlayers will have to investigate who keeps swiping their turkey on rye from the office fridge? Could it be Steve from Accounting? Maybe Phyllis, the 73-year-old secretary with cataracts? Or maybe it's that random a cappella group that runs through the office for some reason? Players will have to find out and stop that shifty sandwich stealer!
Zelda\'s Adventure HD
Remakes and remasters are all the rage , and Nintendo hasn't escaped this nostalgia wave unscathed. From the release of DuckTales Remastered to updated versions of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire , the company that banks on nostalgia is going to do it once again. rn rnHot on the heels of announcing that Zelda U probably won't make it until 2016, Nintendo will soon be announcing a remastering of the very-rare Philips CD-i game, Zelda's Adventure . Satoru Iwata said of the game that the classic title will be subtitled “The Lost Legend,” and will retain all the same gameplay features and “quality” FMV acting. rn rnThough not confirmed, it is widely speculated that success with Zelda's Adventure HD: The Lost Legend could convince Nintendo to do HD remasters of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Link: The Faces of Evil .
