The Most Anticipated Shooters of 2016

2016 has already seen the rollout of a few titles that will surely be on everyone's best first-person shooter games list. Instead of having your hands occupied by those any longer, you’re here because you've got that itch that’s bugging you to find out what will you be playing in the coming months.

2015 was an exciting year for gamers, and this one is shaping up to be even better. Several highly-anticipated first-person shooter games for PS4, Xbox One, and PC are coming; we're most excited about the ones we’ve listed here.

Battleborn

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Release Date: May 3, 2016

Battleborn is a first-person shooter that incorporates multiplayer online battle arena elements into the mix. The story is set during the brink of a galactic disaster. There is only one star left in the galaxy, called Solus, and numerous alien species have gathered there when their planets were destroyed by the Varelsi.

You can likely imagine what happens next. Choose one of 25 characters that come from different factions. Keep in mind that each one has a unique set of abilities, weapons and method of attack. You can level up, but it all resets when the next match begins. This means each player will start with the same base level and they'll unlock new skills and abilities during each match.

On top of that, it will have a scavenging system that will allow you to create modified weapons and equipment. The story takes you four years after the original game. The United States is lost and occupied by the North Koreans. You'll take on the role of Ethan Brady, a resistance fighter with a huge desire to cause unbridled chaos.

From an unlikely company to produce a shooter game, Blizzard, comes the highly-anticipated title Overwatch. The action takes place in a technologically advanced future Earth. Doom

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Release Date: Q2 2016

The next-generation Doom brings the blood and gore, and lots of it, as one might expect (or hope?), and it's relying heavily on three key elements: hard-to-kill demons, big guns, and fast gameplay. Aside from the core single-player experience, a multiplayer mode is expected to set the bar high as well. With three modes in total—Domination, Freeze Tag, and Clan Arena—you can expect many hours of demon hunting in the relative comfort of your room. We all just hope that the game stays true to the legacy that Doom titles before it have crafted.

Space Hulk: Deathwing

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Release Date: TBA 2016

Space Hulk: Deathwing is an upcoming first-person shooter set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. You'll take on a role of a Space Marine from one of the most secret and feared Space Marine Companies: the Deathwing from the Dark Angels chapter, and your task is to lead your fellow Marines through the alien-infested Space Hulk. Being a Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe fan, I am really looking forward to this one.

Paladins

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Release Date: TBA 2016

Paladins come from Smite developer Hi-Rez Studios. It's planned to be a free-to-play team based shooter game with little bit of strategy and an in-game character level up feature via decks of collectible cards. You start off by choosing your Champion. Each one will have a weapon as well as different combat and movement abilities which can be upgraded through ability-boosting cards you collect during the game. Your goal is to capture and hold control points, and ultimately destroy the enemy's base.

Dishonored 2

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • Release Date: TBA 2016

Fifteen years after the Lord Regent has been destroyed and after the Rat Plague has been cured, Corvo Attano is back, once again needed by Empress Emily Kaldwin who's being dethroned. Dishonored 2 brings one major difference from the original to the table. You'll be able to choose who you’ll be playing as, and that’s either Corvo or Emily. Basically this means you’ll be able to play the game twice, since both characters will have different gameplay styles, different endings, and maybe even an entirely different story altogether.
