Uncharted 4’s Survival Update Breaks New Ground In Free DLC Landscape

When Naughty Dog announced last month the impending release of a co-op Survival Mode for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, I don't think anyone thought it would be quite this massive.

In fact, it doesn't even seem like Naughty Dog thought it would be this massive. Back in the Spring, Naughty Dog received praise for outlining a roadmap of Free DLC updates for Uncharted 4, but even their outline had a relatively scant offering planned for this time of the year – a few weapons, skins and other cosmetics; all the usual suspects were represented.

Even in their announcement last month, Naughty Dog was holding out on us. This update for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is absolutely massive, and includes not one, but two new game modes – the co-op wave-survival mode, as promised, and a beta of Capture the Hill.

This is a whole new level of free DLC, the likes of which we haven't seen from a AAA game (correct me if I'm wrong) ever. With new maps, weapons, skins, updated progression system, and game modes that can be played both co-operatively and solo, this is the kind of update that could reasonably cost $20-30, and even more in less responsible hands.

But it's free. F-R-E-E. If you own the game, and have internet access, you get this update. It's a new high-bar for DLC by which other games, such as Titanfall 2, who also announced free DLC plans, will be measured.

This is the kind of game we need to support to show developers that this model works and is profitable, or else we will keep getting more and more games trying to squeeze us for every last penny.
