Tell GR | What is the most overrated game ever?

We love a lot of video games. Like, a lot of video games. If we didn’t, then it’d be highly curious that we chose to work for a site called GameRevolution. However, there are some games that other people love that we just can’t get our heads around. Maybe it’s us, or maybe it’s everyone else, but these games just aren’t our cup of tea and we don’t understand the admiration for them.

We shared our thoughts on the most overrated games ever below, and as always you can leave your own thoughts in the comments section. We’ll feature our favorite response in tomorrow’s Tell GR!

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “Sonic Adventure. I am so confused by this game’s enduring popularity. With its broken-ass camera and unnecessarily convoluted story, this 1998 Dreamcast “classic” somehow set in stone the principles for every 3D Sonic game that followed it. I really can’t fathom why Sega insists on replicating Sonic Adventure‘s incomprehensible running sequences, in which the camera fails to keep up with Sonic as he runs into walls and enemies and 100 MPH. It was annoying in ’98, it’s annoying in 2019, and we’ve got Sonic Adventure‘s popularity to blame for it.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I think the most overrated game of all time is Shadow of the Colossus. I think it’s really good, don’t get me wrong. However, when it came out it had performance issues, camera issues, control issues, all kinds of issues. The PS4 remaster sorted these problems quite a bit, but it’s basically just a boss rush (though there’s really no rush) in a big, empty, unused world.”

Michael Leri, features editor: Mario Kart has always baffled me. I understand that anyone can play it and that most people grew up from it, but separated from that nostalgia, it’s incredibly frustrating. Items take skill out of it and races can often devolve into utter madness of rampant power-up usage. It’s hard to have fun when matches are almost always a dice roll, which feels a bit more neutered in the most recent entry but still prevalent. I did grow up with Crash Team Racing so I may be biased, but it has always been the super kart racer in my eyes.”

Question: Do you have the patience for difficult games?

Bufford: “Only if the challenging gameplay is worthwhile. If it has a good story tied to it, hell yes. If the game is hard, but the gameplay is fun, then sure. If the game is hard for the hell of it and it has no other redeeming qualities, no.”
