BEST RPG EVER

The Daily Vote | What is the best RPG ever?

The Daily Vote is a daily community feature in which GameRevolution’s readers choose the victor of a hotly-contested topic. This week, we decide on the best RPG EVER. From The Witcher 3 to Skyrim, what is the best role-playing game of all time?

The RPG is arguably the most beloved game genre of all. Being able to customize your player-character, fully immerse yourself in a game world, and set out on an epic adventure is what video games were made for. But what’s the best role-playing game ever?

The GR editorial team have cast their votes, but now it’s time for you to decide. Vote below on Twitter or Facebook (or leave your own choices in the comments!), and we’ll reveal the winner in tomorrow’s The Daily Vote.

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “I’m voting for ‘none of the above’ this time around, as I much preferred Divinity: Original Sin 2 to any of the choices listed. While its final act slowed the pace considerably, everything leading up until that point was magic, and playing through what is essentially a fantastic Dungeons & Dragons campaign with visual aids is everything I want from an RPG.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I don’t really agree that any of these four are the best RPG ever. I love all of them, but they all have their flaws. Out of the four, I objectively think that The Witcher 3 is the best. It’s an absolutely massive experience but doesn’t have the problem with repetition that most games its size do. However, I had the most fun playing Breath of the Wild out of those four games. I really loved how that game spurred you to explore the world with only the barest of obvious hints about what you would find. The story was simple, but the world was breathtaking and revitalized Nintendo’s game design in my mind.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “While I love, love, love the other games featured here, I think my vote has to go to The Witcher 3. It really does have it all, without becoming too overwhelming. It’s accessible to players simply looking for a compelling story, but also those who want to dive in deep within build customization, side mission completion, and the world’s lore. For those wanting more, there are some truly standout DLC expansions at a great price.”

Bradley Russell, news editor: “The best RPG ever is, obviously, The Witcher 3. It’s a game so good that it makes other games worse just because you realize you’re not playing the Witcher 3. The detail is unparalleled, the fantasy world endlessly sprawling in its scope, and the Blood and Wine DLC would rank up there as a top 10 game for me of all time if it was released separately. Yes, it’s that good. Geralt is king, and no one is taking his crown.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “I’m not a big RPG person but I adored Mass Effect 2 for its superb and concise writing. I ran through the entire series after slogging through Andromeda to see if I still loved the original three and the quality bar from that trilogy to the new one is pretty drastic. And that’s mainly thanks to Mass Effect 2 for setting the quality bar that high. While I love the story of the first one and the third one in general, ME2 is hard to beat not only within its series but also in the grand scheme of gaming due to its unforgettable story, world, and characters.”
