The penultimate episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch is here, and it sets up quite a confrontation for next week’s season finale. In this episode, titled ‘Return to Kamino,’ the Batch head back to the planet on which they were born. They’re searching for Hunter, the group’s leader, who was captured by the Empire last episode. He’s in trouble of his own, as he comes face-to-face with Crosshair, who betrayed the group and defected to the Imperial army. Yes, the crux of this episode’s drama is the tense reunion between ice-cold sniper Crosshair and his former teammates. At the end of last week’s episode, we were teased with a meeting between Crosshair and Hunter. This week, it came to fruition. There’s a thrilling exchange as Hunter is held prisoner, and Crosshair taunts him about how he’ll imprison the rest of the Batch once they arrive.
Of course, that does inevitably happen, with Echo, Wrecker, Tech, and Omega in tow. They all confront Crosshair, too, in a final battle that hugely boosts the stakes for the finale. The episode ends as they’re all forced to work together to defeat a barrage of Dark Troopers. Shockingly, Crosshair then reveals that he’d wanted to fight for the Empire all along, and had his inhibitor chip removed long ago. The final sting is that Imperial Admiral Rampart has ordered a group of Star Destroyers to eviscerate Kamino. It means our heroes are in for a battle for survival next episode – and they might need Crosshair’s help.
Since the Batch currently find themselves stranded on Kamino as it’s torn apart by the Empire, they’ll likely need to team up with Crosshair to survive. This episode showed off his astounding blaster accuracy, and they’ll need that to evade the Empire’s onslaught. Equally, don’t be surprised if we see a last-minute turn to good from Crosshair, Darth Vader-style. Since the Empire have effectively left him for dead, and the Batch will probably save him from a fiery death, his allegiances could well change once more. Of course, he could also meet a grisly end during the battle – marking himself as the Batch’s first casualty. The week-long wait for the finale is going to be a long one.
