Since the early 90's Chris Metzen has made major contributions to Blizzard IPs, even before they were known as Blizzard Entertainment. His work included co-creation of the Diablo and Warcraft universes, story development, artwork, and even notable voice work, particularly where he has been the voice of characters such as Thrall and Vol'Jin.
After more than two decades of work at the company he has decided to retire at the age of 42. No public statement regarding his departure from Blizzard has been given, leaving explanations up in the air.
Metzen was revered among Blizzard fans, and regularly gave presentations on behalf of the company, including at its yearly BlizzCon conference. Most recently he spoke at great length about Overwatch, and was highly excited for its launch which ended up being a massive success.
Interestingly enough, a user on Reddit pointed out, "He retired to spend time with his family at the same time Thrall stepped down.. to spend time with his family…". What a great way to end a career.
