Zelda: Breath of the Wild Is Getting a Season Pass and Story DLC

In an unprecedented move for the series, Nintendo revealed today on its website that upcoming release The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will feature two DLC packs. The packs will be released on a rolling basis, and can be obtained all at once via a $19.99 season pass. Does anybody recall me mentioning this in a recent article?

The first pack, scheduled to launch this summer, includes the addition of a "Cave of Trials" challenge, an endeavor seen in past Zelda titles where Link must defeat waves of enemies while venturing deeper and deeper into a dungeon with many floors, often several dozen.

The second pack, coming Holiday 2017, is arguably far more interesting, and will add "new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and a new original story." It's this move in particular that is brand new territory for Zelda, as previously all story and main dungeon content has been included from day one.

That said, this shouldn't necessarily be seen as a withholding of content either; with over 100 mini-dungeon "shrines" and the normal swathe of full-size dungeons included from the start, it's tough to argue the day-one game lacks things to do. I suppose we'll find out for sure once it's released how things balance out.

There's also an added perk for those purchasing the "expansion pass," and it comes in the form of extra treasure chests. These will appear in the Great Plateau starting area, and will offer two useful items in addition to a Nintendo Switch shirt for Link to wear. Yes, you read that right. We'll see if the other two items prove as useful as Nintendo claims when Breath of the Wild launches on March 3rd.
