After setting the internet aflame for an entire week with rumors and speculation, Nintendo has officially announced plans to debut a new console at E3 when it kicks off on June 7th. The unnamed console will be in "playable" form at E3 and will likely have top billing during Nintendo's annual E3 press conference. Nintendo has also revealed plans for a 2012 release date.
President Satoru Iwata says Nintendo will "propose a new approach to home video game consoles", hinting at the new, touchscreen-enabled controllers that have been the focal point of many of the recent rumors. And just because the company focused on 3D with its most recent handheld, they don't plan making 3D the main draw with this new home console. Iwata continued:
It's difficult to make 3-D images a key feature, because 3-D televisions haven't obtained wide acceptance yet.
E3 is less than two months away and GR will be there live from the show floor reporting on this new Nintendo console. Can Nintendo revolutionize the way we play video games yet again? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
