Super Mario Odyssey’s Cappy Made an Appearance at the Royal Wedding

The Royal Wedding was pretty much inescapable this past weekend, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tying the knot as a worldwide audience watched on. As is typically the case with British royal ceremonies, a lot of attention was placed on the headwear of the event’s attendees, with a variety of over-the-top hats making an appearance. However, the highlight was reserved for those watching the wedding at home, with the Super Mario Odyssey sidekick Cappy making his way onto the BBC’s broadcast.

Cappy befriends Mario in the Nintendo Switch game Super Mario Odyssey, with the platforming hero using the sentient hat in order to defeat enemies and maneuver around the game’s various worlds. With the sun beaming down on London during the day of the Royal Wedding, one man decided to protect himself from its rays with a giant, plushie hat resembling Cappy. Needless to say, viewers were quick to point out the unexpected cameo appearance:

Either this unnamed man saw the perfect opportunity to represent the iconic Nintendo mascot, or he was simply allowing Cappy to attend another historic wedding. Super Mario Odyssey sees Bowser kidnap Princess Peach before attempting to force her to marry him, with Mario setting off on (another) mission to rescue her. During the course of the game, Mario can obtain a wedding dress costume, leading to some incredibly meme-worthy scenes such as the one below:

The BBC’s Royal Wedding coverage was watched by around 13.1 million people, making it the most-viewed broadcast during the event. The wedding was also the most-watched event of the year thus far, overshadowing ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent debut episode, which pulled in around 9.6 million. This means that a LOT of people got the chance to see Cappy enjoying the festivities.
